The aim is to study individual philosophers, what they said or say and write about. We then have a good discussion about their ideas and relate it to our modern life.

Philosophy is all about curiosity, a plain desire to understand something rather than acquire knowledge as a means to some other end. Bertrand Russell defined philosophy as the no – man’s land between science and theology; exposed to attacks from both sides.

So, what do we do each time we meet? Each member takes it in turn to produce a researched document about a particular philosopher and their philosophical ideas, we read through it and then the most enjoyable aspect is the discussion it produces as we attempt to understand the ideas presented. We certainly do not accept any ideas without understanding and evidence.

We ended up before Christmas with philosophers of the middle 20th century, and now we have decided to go back to where it all started out (or at least was thought to have started) with the ancient Greeks as it is several years since we last looked at them.
